As such Petals & Tales will be inspired by both nonsense literature and traditions within dance theatre. The use of space will focus on the performance being in the round, allowing the audience to surround the piece and be close to the action. The use of time will be non-linear and focus on constant shifts in images from different fairytales being presented. The choreography and music will illustrate colorful and surreal elements from different fairytales, but never explain, allowing for individual understandings of the performance. different images spring to mind for the audience while constantly being reminded that one’s imagination is a treasure to hold on to. As such, Petals and Tales, will happily cut and paste, mix and match excerpts from different fairytales allowing for the poem to be a through line in the piece. The reader accepts the surreal as long as there is a through line, a story to follow. Fairytales have several recognizable features and qualities, one of which is the ability to mix surreal elements with logic. The performance will not tell a story from the beginning till the end, but rather present a series of images that stirs the imagination. A play between the choreographic sections and a sound score that incorporates text from chosen fairytales and the poem will create a colorful and complex dance theatre production, playing on familiarities still encouraging new reflections. Snippets of selected fairy tales still told to children today intertwined with The flowerpot man allows for choreographic sections that plays on the images presented in the stories as well as more abstract reflections on both the fairy tales and the poem. The child is reminded to hold on to the imagination and reassured that it is a treasure. The flowerpot man is a beautiful poem capturing this journey leaving the adult reader nostalgic yet intrigued by the world left behind. Through our childhood we are taught to think rationally and slowly ridding ourselves of the imagination that enable fantastic landscapes, images and understandings of the world to be present in our everyday lives. Children ́s imagination is often greater than the ones of adults. The poem together with chosen fairy tales will create the thematic back bone of the performance. Petals and Tales takes its inspiration from the poem The flowerpot man also translated to Norwegian with the title Blomemannen. Petals and Tales will especially appeal to children from the age of six to twelve, but still aim to reach those older and create a cross-generational audience. For collaborative purposes the project brief is in English. The piece will be co-produced with possibly SangSangMaRu in South-Korea, and aims to tour for children and youth from the age of six in both Norway and the Korea. Petals and Tales will have an original sound score made by UK composer Nathaniel Reed. Petals and Tales will aim to become a highly visual, colourful and theatrical trio, with an original score featuring text from poetry and fairy tales, a set of sunflowers and rose petals, and complex choreography incorporating unison structures, solo work, comedy, partner work, use of props and theatrical devices, and compelling audience contact.
